A Nursery weekly lesson plan focusing on Hot and Cold. Children learn about hot and cold weather, clothing, food, and temperatures through safe sensory touch, trace letter Pp, and study number 4.

What children learn

  • Describe typical summer and winter weather conditions.
  • Associate clothing, food, and activities with hot or cold conditions.
  • Compare temperatures safely through touch and visual cues and state preferences.
  • Recognise and write Pp and understand the symbol and value of number 4.

Key activities

  • Sorting and discussing summer weather picture cards
  • Exploring and matching items of winter clothing
  • Comparing bottles of water at different safe temperatures
  • Sorting images and objects using visual signs of hot and cold
  • Creating a preference chart for weather, foods, and clothes

You’ll need

summer and winter picture cards, winter clothes, hot-and-cold flashcards, bottles and safely varied water temperatures, ice, paper and crayons, food and clothing images, letter Pp cards, number 4 cards, paint and counting objects

Structure: 5 days; each day: Thought of the Day, Tuning-in Time, Warm-up, EVS, Literacy, Numeracy
