A Nursery weekly lesson plan focusing on Stones. Children investigate the uses and types of stones and rocks, experiment with floating and sinking, trace letter Oo, and learn number 3.

What children learn

  • Identify everyday uses of stones and distinguish stones from rocks.
  • Compare stones and pebbles by size, shape, colour, and texture.
  • Predict and test whether different objects float or sink.
  • Recognise and write Oo and understand the name, symbol, and value of number 3.

Key activities

  • Matching stone-made objects with their uses
  • Observing and drawing samples of rocks and stones
  • Identifying hidden stones and pebbles by touch
  • Conducting a float-and-sink test with stones and other small objects
  • Building stone houses and painting smooth pebbles for a class display

You’ll need

stone-object pictures, samples of rocks, stones and pebbles, opaque bags, buckets and water, buttons and marbles, coins, playdough and twigs, paint and brushes, letter Oo cards and sand trays, number 3 cards

Structure: 5 days; each day: Thought of the Day, Tuning-in Time, Warm-up, EVS, Literacy, Numeracy
