A Nursery weekly lesson plan themed around the Night Sky. Children observe the moon and stars, identify sky colors and nighttime activities, trace letter Bb, and explore the circle shape.

What children learn

  • Identify familiar features of the night sky.
  • Discuss activities and routines associated with nighttime.
  • Recognise, trace, and write the letter Bb and its sound.
  • Identify and construct circles and practise left and right curves.

Key activities

  • Painting a night sky with wax-resist magic painting
  • Exploring a night-sky sensory bin
  • Talking through familiar nighttime activities with a pretend microphone
  • Playing Jump in the Circle
  • Creating a moon-and-stars picture with toothbrush splatter painting

You’ll need

night-sky drawing sheets, dark paper and paint, candles or white wax crayons, moon and star cut-outs, sensory trays with black legumes or sand, cotton and foil, circle objects, letter Bb cards, chalk and slate

Structure: 5 days; each day: Thought of the Day, Tuning-in Time, Warm-up, EVS, Literacy, Numeracy
