KG Unit 3 Week 1 — Continents and Oceans

Children take a five-day tour of the seven continents and five oceans, locating major land masses and comparing their features and sizes. Map games, art, dramatic play, literacy work, quantity comparisons, music, mindfulness, and fireless cooking reinforce the theme across learning areas.

What children learn

  • Name the seven continents and investigate the world's oceans.
  • Locate and discuss Oceania, Europe, Antarctica, North America, South America, Africa, and Asia.
  • Recognise Africa and Asia as the two largest continents.
  • Build blending sounds with the vowel "o" and practise writing Oo.
  • Compare quantities using greater-than and less-than language and symbols.

Key activities

  • Pinning aeroplane cut-outs onto named continents on a world map
  • Creating a Splatter Art Map with continent cut-outs and paint
  • Exploring the five oceans through discussion and water-themed props
  • Taking part in Beach Dramatic Play and breathing with a pinwheel
  • Comparing quantities with candies, beans, blocks, and handfuls of beads
  • Assembling a world-map jigsaw and making Black Chickpea Chaat

world maps and world-map outlines, continent cut-outs and ocean labels, paper and paint, paper plates and toothbrushes, letter and number flashcards, beans and other counting manipulatives, dramatic-play props, black chickpea chaat ingredients

Structure: 5 days; each day: Thought of the Day, Tuning-in Time, Warm-up, Social Studies/Science, Creative Learning, English, Maths
