Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the core foundation for self-awareness, emotional regulation, and positive relationships. During their early years, children begin to recognize, understand, and manage their feelings while learning to navigate peer connections, develop empathy, and solve social conflicts. At Superbuddy, we integrate social-emotional growth into active, collaborative play, helping children build the confidence to express themselves and cooperate with others.

Instead of lecturing children about behaviors, our curriculum utilizes storybook discussions and shared, cooperative quests. By walking in a character’s shoes or coordinating with peers to complete a hands-on physical challenge, children naturally practice sharing, turn-taking, and active listening. These shared triumphs and negotiations help children learn how to build deep, respectful friendships and develop a strong sense of personal identity.

Skill Progression & Milestones

Social and emotional capabilities develop progressively through relationships and secure environments:

Ages 1–3: Children transition from playing side-by-side (parallel play) to interacting with peers, express a growing sense of independence, begin labeling simple feelings (such as happy, mad, sad), and rely on familiar adults for emotional comfort.
Ages 3–5: Children show basic sharing and turn-taking behaviors with gentle guidance, express pride in achievements, recognize emotions in peers, and begin using verbal reasoning to negotiate minor disagreements during play.
Ages 5–6: Children build stable peer friendships, demonstrate empathy by offering comfort to peers in distress, collaborate on structured team quests, and practice self-regulation strategies (such as taking deep breaths) with gentle adult support.

Observable Learning: What to Look For

Use these active benchmarks to support and document a child’s social-emotional growth:

Emotional Vocabulary: Does the child identify and name their own emotions and those of characters in storybooks?
Collaborative Play: Can the child participate in group quests, taking turns and negotiating roles with minimal adult intervention?
Perspective and Empathy: Does the child show concern or ask questions when a peer is upset, lonely, or hurt?
Self-Regulation: Does the child make attempts to calm down or ask for a break when experiencing big feelings or frustration?
