Early years science observation is structured across global frameworks through hands-on exploration of ecology, seasonal patterns, and community roles rather than abstract memorization. Worldwide curricula align on using active sensory experiences to build early scientific reasoning and social studies awareness from a young age. Natural environments and pre-k ecology concepts
In the United Kingdom, the UK Department for Education’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes Understanding the World as a core specific area of learning. In Hong Kong, the Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide (KECG) issued by the Education Bureau, Hong Kong SAR incorporates science within its Nature and Living learning area. This guide encourages children to notice weather changes, understand the seasons, and explore how these natural cycles affect daily human life, such as the clothing we wear or the foods we eat.
In Sweden, the Lpfö 18 curriculum issued by Skolverket expects preschools (förskola) to help children explore the Natural Science and Technology (Naturvetenskap och teknik) area, understanding how simple natural cycles work. Swedish educators often use outdoor excursions to teach children about seasonal changes, observing how local trees, soil, and animal behaviors change from autumn to spring.
Tracking these shifts teaches children to notice patterns and make predictions. Recording the temperature, collecting rainwater, or observing ice melting are concrete ways to practice scientific modeling without needing complex laboratory equipment.
Social studies and community awareness
In Singapore, the Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework issued by the Ministry of Education, Singapore includes Discovery of the World as a key learning area. The framework emphasizes social studies early childhood concepts alongside natural science, guiding children to understand their local communities, appreciate different cultures, and recognize the roles of community helpers like firefighters and doctors.
In Australia, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) issued by ACECQA and the Australian Government structures these concepts under its learning outcome focused on connection to the world, encouraging children to connect with and contribute to their world. The EYLF encourages children in preschool and kindy settings to explore active citizenship, understanding how their actions impact their local communities and the wider environment.
These frameworks demonstrate that natural science and social studies are deeply connected. Learning about our world means understanding both the physical environment and the social networks that keep our neighborhoods safe and organized.
