Back in the classroom or home, children can group these items by size, texture, or color, which naturally practices early mathematical sorting.

Investigating everyday household materials

Children are natural scientists who form complex theories about how the world works. Educators and parents do not need expensive toys to encourage scientific inquiry; everyday household objects are highly effective.

A simple water-play investigation is a classic sink-or-float activity. Fill a small plastic tub with water and provide a variety of safe items, such as plastic spoons, corks, metal keys, and sponges. Before dropping each item into the tub, ask your child to predict whether it will sink or float. This activity develops vocabulary, supports hypothesis testing, and builds scientific reasoning without the pressure of formal testing. Shared storytelling and community connections

Exploring story and communication is central to the living inquiry of Communication and Literacies. Activities that focus on family stories and community connections help young children build a strong sense of identity.

Create a class or family photo book. Gather photos of family members, pets, local parks, or community helpers like firefighters and librarians. Sit with your child and invite them to describe what is happening in each photo. You can write down their exact words underneath the picture to build an early connection between spoken language and print. This activity supports social-emotional development and reinforces the child’s feeling of safety and belonging in their local community.
