Inquiry-based learning in the early years is an educational approach that uses children’s natural curiosity and questions as the starting point for learning. These questions are not distractions from the curriculum. Instead, they are valuable teaching opportunities. A simple four-step inquiry cycle

Implementing inquiry-based learning does not require a complete overhaul of your daily schedule. Educators can facilitate meaningful investigations using a structured, four-step cycle: notice, wonder, investigate, and share.

1. Notice

The cycle begins with observation. The educator provides interesting, open-ended materials or points out natural phenomena to spark interest. During this phase, children use their senses to observe details. For example, an educator might place several different types of leaves on a science table. Children look at the shapes, feel the textures, and trace the veins with their fingers.

2. Wonder

As children observe, questions naturally emerge. The educator encourages this curiosity by writing down the children’s thoughts and wonders. Prompting children with open-ended prompts, such as describing what they see or what they think will happen, helps them articulate their thoughts. The goal is to identify a core question that can be investigated.

3. Investigate

During the investigation phase, children engage in hands-on activities to find answers. This might involve testing materials, conducting simple experiments, or looking at pictures in books. If children are investigating leaves, they might sort them by size, test if they float in water, or use paint to make leaf rubbings. The educator supports this work by providing necessary tools, such as magnifying glasses or sorting trays, and observing the children’s progress.

4. Share

In the final phase, children communicate their findings. Sharing can take many forms, including drawing a picture of their observations, talking about their discoveries during circle time, or creating a collaborative classroom display. Documenting this stage helps children reflect on their learning and reinforces their new understanding.

What inquiry-based learning is not

A common misconception is that inquiry-based learning means letting children do whatever they want in a chaotic classroom. This is not the case. Inquiry-based learning is not unplanned chaos, nor is it a hands-off approach where the educator does nothing.

Without structure and educator guidance, child-led play can become repetitive and lose its educational value. Inquiry-based learning requires careful planning and intentionality. The educator must prepare a rich environment, select appropriate materials, and know when to step in with support and when to let children solve problems independently. It is a highly structured pedagogy that balances child initiative with professional teaching strategies.
