The difference between gross and fine motor skills
Early childhood physical development is broadly divided into two main categories: gross motor skills and fine motor skills. For example, a child uses gross motor skills to kick a ball or climb a ladder, while using fine motor skills to thread beads, zip a jacket, or hold a pencil. - Star stretches. Direct children to stretch their arms and legs as wide as possible to look like a star, then curl down into a tight ball on the floor. This transition between extension and flexion builds body awareness and core stability.
- Hop and freeze. Have children hop on one foot or march around the room, then freeze instantly in a balanced pose when you call out a specific word. This game supports balance and physical self-regulation.
- Shadow steps. Encourage children to move across the room using slow-motion, giant strides while making as little sound as possible. This practice requires significant muscle control and balance.
Supporting physical development at home and school
Physical coordination develops gradually, and every young child progresses at their own pace. For instance, many children around age 3 learn to walk upstairs using alternating feet, while many children around age 4 or 5 can hop on one foot or catch a bounced ball with confidence.
