Understanding the four themes of Aistear

The Aistear themes are the four core pillars that structure early childhood learning and development in Ireland for children from birth to six years. Established by NCCA (Ireland), these Irish early childhood themes replace traditional academic subjects to support babies, toddlers, and young children in a holistic manner.

By shifting the focus from rigid subjects to integrated areas, the national curriculum framework helps educators in creches, preschools, and infant classes design play-based experiences. Understanding these Aistear learning areas allows teachers and families to support a child’s natural development and interest.

Well-being (Folláine)

The theme of Well-being focuses on helping children develop a strong, positive sense of self, emotional resilience, and healthy physical habits. In Irish preschool environments, this theme recognizes that happy, secure children are better equipped to explore their surroundings and learn.

To support this theme, educators focus on warm, welcoming environments where children feel valued and respected. Activities include practicing physical coordination through outdoor games, learning about healthy food choices, and establishing daily hygiene routines like handwashing. Teachers also help children name and manage their emotions, supporting self-regulation and positive social behavior during preschool activities. This emotional foundation is critical for a smooth transition to Junior Infants.

Identity and Belonging (Féiniúlacht agus Muintearas)

This theme supports young learners in building a positive sense of who they are within their family, their peer group, and their local neighborhood. It emphasizes the importance of community and helps children feel a secure connection to their heritage and culture.

In early childhood settings, teachers foster inclusion by displaying photos of each child’s family and celebrating local festivals. Children learn about their own unique qualities while developing respect for others who may have different backgrounds or languages. Educators also introduce children to community helper roles, such as firefighters or postal workers, to help them understand how societies cooperate. This sense of belonging prepares kids to be active, empathetic citizens.

Communicating (Cumarsáid)

The Communicating theme is designed to help young children share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, while also learning to listen and interact with others. It spans a wide variety of expression, including non-verbal gestures, spoken language, phonics, and creative arts.
